I became overwhelmed at the idea of heavily restrictive diets and rigid changes, so I finally started to change my thinking about two years ago.

First I simply started looking for the "healthier" version of most of the things I liked. (Less fat, less sugar/no sugar, whole grains, etc.)

Then I started adding more vegetables or fruit to one meal a day, then all meals. I had to realize that it as FINE to eat the fruits & veggies I liked, versus the "best" ones for me.

And, so on. But I only made one or two changes in a month, for the first entire year.

Because I did it slowly and only eat what I LIKE and tastes good to me (as I progress what takes good changes quite a bit), I never feel unsatisfied or like I'm sacrificing.

Today, I don't have many processed foods in the house, or white sugar, white bread, etc. Mostly as a byproduct of the slow changes adding up as I go along. I never said, "No more white sugar!" Instead I said, "I wonder if honey would work in this.."

I've only lost 26 pounds in two years. Which is really slow by the fad-diet "lose 10 pounds this week" trend. But if someone put last night's dinner in front of me two years ago, I would have gagged and went out to eat. So I'm proud to have changed my tastes to something healthier.

Anyway, I only share this story to help inspire others. I was happy to find your site with some good sane and sound advice.

-SarahAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7027178488034287843.post-49555587933021158132012-07-03T15:08:33.736-05:002012-07-03T15:08:33.736-05:00Having kidney stones twice, my doctor suggested th...Having kidney stones twice, my doctor suggested that I start drinking cranberry juice daily every morning, as cranberries are supposed to help prevent the formation of kidney stones. I would say I am mostly in agreement with what you say, especially the notion that a physician is more qualified than a detail rep to judge the merits of a particular drug, but there is something you overlook. Generic drugs exist BECAUSE OF brand-name drugs. The latter cost so much more because they have to cover the cost of research and development that eventually lead to these discoveries. No R&D = no brand-name drugs = no generics.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7027178488034287843.post-1655835417911471982012-06-02T07:27:24.487-05:002012-06-02T07:27:24.487-05:00Very niceVery niceAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7027178488034287843.post-13166147494281759182012-05-18T09:23:22.057-05:002012-05-18T09:23:22.057-05:00I think it's important to know who funded all ...I think it's important to know who funded all those studies.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7027178488034287843.post-86211604031773260672012-05-02T19:06:28.052-05:002012-05-02T19:06:28.052-05:00Well, when I eat peanuts, corn, or popcorn I end u...Well, when I eat peanuts, corn, or popcorn I end up with a major diverticulitis flare. We need a major overhaul to allow this program to actually be beneficial to it's recipients, we all need help now and again. We as Americans have bowed our heads and ignored the fact that we have people who want to help themselves and others who have given up on themselves. I don't know that this program actually acknowledges the whole person, it's as if the only way we can deal with others is to compartmentalize their issue instead of taking care of the whole humanbeing.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7027178488034287843.post-45035012819753323932012-02-14T08:45:02.355-06:002012-02-14T08:45:02.355-06:00Research shows that greater overall benefits are a...Research shows that greater overall benefits are achieved when your D-25 level is over 50. Doctors looked at them but didn't know what they were, and didn't suggest any remedy. Finally, In October 2007 a dermatologist performed a biopsy and the diagnosis was Superficial Actinic Porokeratosis, and prescribed Hydrocortisone Valerate cream. I applied this cream for two weeks, but it didn't help. I started taking 2,000 I.U. vitamin D-3 daily about three years ago and now my D-3 level is in the 30s. I am sure they also consider themselves "good" church going folks, but then that is a whole different conversation. Actually, I think that ANY program that helps people stay healthy is a good way to save tax payer's money. What happen to an ounce of prevention and an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Sorry Dr. Berry, I am sure you would love to see less patients if it means they are healthy, and would rather deal with people that have non life threatening issues. Wouldn't it be better if people could afford healthy foods like fresh veggies and lean meat? Instead of subsidising fast food, big ag and processed food corps such as ConAG, shouldn't we be subsidising in our society in eating healthier foods, and maybe instead of waiting for Insurance companies to pay on claims after unhealthy eating and pay for education on proper nutrients. We are one of the richest countries in the world, yet more than half of it's citizens are low income, yes, that was released this past Friday. Why is getting a fast food burger and fried foods cheaper than buying healthy food and prepare it at home? Why are package processed foods cheaper, if you doubt it, take a look at Wal-mart or any grocery store and compare the prices. Why is it that most people that are food insecure, i.e., don't have enough money to pay for food for the whole month, have the worst diet. I can answer that because pasta and high carb food is cheap and filling, even though that it's NOT good for people, and after years of eating it, causes impaired glucose tolerance, a pre diabetes. You figure in all the corn syrup products, white sugar, white flour, ect. and ect., it's NOT surprising that Americans have an epidemic with Diabetes, O.A., and obesity. We now have kids in this generation that WILL NOT live as long as their parents, we are all in this society together. We all will be paying higher health care costs, regardless if you are not on food stamps, or think that its about poor people being stupid. They are eating crappy food because it's cheap, and Food Stamps are not suppose to be the only money source for a families food. It is suppose to be a supplemental, so that a family wouldn't be food insecure. At times I am so embarrassed at my fellow Americans, what happen to empathy, is it only disgraceful when it happens to you personally, instead of someone you know of?Kim Caseynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7027178488034287843.post-34369342349458090072011-12-07T23:16:17.147-06:002011-12-07T23:16:17.147-06:00Ken just wanted to stop by and say I enjoyed this ...Ken just wanted to stop by and say I enjoyed this article, good to see others getting some benefits from vitamin D as I have.Mickhttp://www.vitamindsupplements.co.uk/noreply@blogger.com
